Hi All,

Managed to log in this time after trying three different computers!

This morning on start-up the following message appeared.

Invalid boot Inv boot file.

<Windows Root>\System 32\ \hal.dll

corrupted or missing dll file.

I've downloaded another dll.hal file and have it on a memory stick at the moment.

What is the next step? Do I need a XP boot disc to start the system?

I've done this sort of operation years ago on W95, W98 and W98SE but this has never been needed on XP.

Perhaps I've had a good run for the last eight or so years.

Computer here is Dell Dimension 2400 series.

Windows XP home edition with SP2

1GB RAM, video adapter Nvidia with 512 Mb on board.

Restore point created about 2nd June, systen OK at the time.

Over the last week there has ben a delay at start-up, system 'hanging' around the Welcome screen.

Apart from that no other problems that I can remember.

Any suggestions welcomed

Regards

John

Hello and welcome fellow Camarthenshire.....

Firstly I would of booted into BIOS and checked that HDD is first boot device,if it is not then set it as first boot save and exit.

If you still get the hal.dll errors:

It is easier to do a repair install with the XP install disk.

Missing or corrupted dll files, preventing start-up

Hi Jelly Bean,

Thanks for the help and the link to Microsoft support.

I've tried the original disc in the CD ROM and had got as far as the Command prompt in the Recovery Console.

I'll read the Microsoft instructions again tomorrow and see what I can do.

Thanks again

Regards

Missing dll files sorted

Hi JB,

Early start this morning.

I used the bootcfg option and then the rebuild option.

Windows>bootcfg /rebuild

All went well and problem is now solved.

Thanks for your help

Regards

John
