VPN defaults to Modem, not NIC

I'm struggling with setting up a VPN connection on a laptop. For some

reason, it wants to default to the modem and not use the nic, even when I'm

specifically setting up otherwise. The wizard seems to have a mind of its

own. I've also tried it within the internet connection preferences. What

should I do next?
