Guest Jeff Mort Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Interesting ... Windows XP Pro boots up, you can log in with no problems, however, nothing shows up on the screen, no icons, no bar on the bottom, nothing. If you CTRL-ALT-DEL and open task manager you can run programs all day long. Mouse and keyboard work fine. I'm at a loss, I've used System Mechanic to see if there were any problems that could be solved, and I've turned off all startup items. Any help would be great.

Try running explorer.exe via the Task Manager. If this does not solve the problem permanently, use System Restore to fix it.

Did you run System Mechanic just before this happened? -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM Do not reply with email
Guest Gerry Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Re: Windows Boots - nothing shows Jeff Dump System Mechanic. Registry Cleaners are not a good way to maintain your computer. http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/646752.htm -- Hope this helps. Guest Jeff Mort Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Re: Windows Boots - nothing shows Frank, No, I installed it afterwards, I am able to access the network, so I downloaded it and installed it from a network drive. Most programs will run from the Task Manager, I am now going to look into the possibility it is a virus. Thanks! Guest Jeff Mort Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Re: Windows Boots - nothing shows How do you use System Restore to fix the problem. I've installed SP3 and it was suppose to write a new explorer.exe to the Windows folder, it still doesn't work. I'm about ready to scrap the fix and start with a fresh drive and go from there. Guest Jeff Mort Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Re: Windows Boots - nothing shows Thanks Gerry, it gave me a lot to look at, unfortunately none of them worked. Installing SP3 is essential information! Good luck with the re-installation.
