Laptop lags when on charge

I have a Lenovo laptop that I use and sometimes when I run resource heavy programs, eg. a game for too long on charge the laptop lags. This lag makes the laptop unusable until I unplug the charge or close the program and wait a while. I've followed various online tutorials and messed around with power settings to no avail.
