Hi, I have started a job working from home. I have been sent a template in word 2007 and I only have word 2010 installed on my pc. I can read the document fine but it won't let me edit it or anything else - just view it or print it. It's a template which I need to fill in and send to different people many times a day. Can you help?

I have Windows 7.

Thanks.

Hi, not being fully up to date with this BUT my daughter had a simular situation and she converted to a PDF file which allowed her to ammend items. [she also works from home and needs this on a daily basis]

There are a number of FREE programs avail to do it. Good luck and someone else may give a better reply.

Hi RachieA

If you right click on the file > Properties ...........is "Read Only" checked ?

Word 2010 is totally compatible with 2007 and you should be able to edit it.

Word 2010 default is to save as .docx extension which some of your customers may not be able to read if they have Word 2007 or earlier.

You can, however, alter this in Save As to Word97 - 2003 which is .doc extension.

Thank you for your replies.

When I go to my "downloads" box, right click on the file name, "properties", "read only" is not ticked. It did say it might be blocked because it came from another computer so I clicked "unblock" but the same problem occurs. When I try to type in one of the fields in the template it says "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked".

Hi

Try this:

Right click on the document > Properties > Advanced

If "File is Ready for Archiving" is checked .....uncheck it.

If "Allow this document to have file indexed in addition to ....." is there check this.

I assume that your version of 2010 is not a trial version and is a full installation ?

Hi

Try this:

Right click on the document > Properties > Advanced

If "File is Ready for Archiving" is checked .....uncheck it. Ok I've done this.

If "Allow this document to have file indexed in addition to ....." is there check this. This was already checked.

I assume that your version of 2010 is not a trial version and is a full installation ? Yes full version.

Still same problem I'm afraid.

This is really frustrating me as everything I've read implies that having Office 2010 will enable me to use/edit documents created in 2007.

When I call up the document it opens in Word 2007 compatibility mode. When I click on the file icon the only words in bold that I can use are "Open", "Print" and "Close". The following are all faded and I can't click on them "New", "Convert", "Save", "Save As", "Prepare", "Send" and "Publish".

When I click on any of the tabs in the ribbon across the top, everything is faded except for some under the "View" tab.

When I try and type in one of the fields it states at the bottom of the screen "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked".

I had a "chat" on the microsfot website and they told me to uninstall the 2010 trial that came with the computer but it isn't listed in the programmes that can be uninstalled so I can't do that either.

It's getting a bit embarrassing to be honest because I can't use it for work.

I asked this earlier - and apparently it is.

uninstall the 2010 trial that came with the computer

I assume that the trial period is over ?

Download Open Office and see if you can open the template with that.

This is free.

Hi

Can you not print the document then scan it back in? or do you not yet have a printer/scanner?

The option of Open Office as mentioned by KenB is probably best, however if Open Office has problems let us know, as there are ways to make Open Office accept documents from the Microsoft Office programs where it may refuse them.

A final way round is to highlight all the document via "Select all" or via mouse pointer, copy it, then paste to a fresh page.
