How to recover files from a external harddrive that isnt appearing in files.

I installed windows onto my external hard drive with many files on it, in an effort to quickly factory reset my pc but it just **** up the hard drive instead. When I go into a recovery software it shows all the files are still there so I am just wondering how I can recover them without paying exuberant amounts for a key. When in Disk Management it appears as DISK 2 partition 2 saying its healthy and online and empty. The option to change drive letter and path is greyed out so I don't know what to do.
