tunna Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Hi everyone, I'm having problems with the wireless button after I took my laptop apart to clean. The wireless button won't switch on at all and doesn't light up. When I press fn f8 nothing happens. I'm not sure what I've done. The wires are correctly in place as far as I can tell. I've tried the following things: Uninstalling the adapter in device manager and rebooting Checked adapter is listed as working properly Do a system restore Check BIOS I'm not sure what else to do so would appreciate any pointers. Thanks in advance! Quote
KenB Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS Which laptop ( make and model ) do you have ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
tunna Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Hi thanks :) It's a Toshiba Equium L140-141 Quote
KenB Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I read your thread on the other forum. And what should we say about that now? You, as notebook owner, are not authorized to disassemble notebook. This guy wasn't very helpful at all !! If you own the notebook and want to pull it apart - then nobody can stop you :) Is the wireless device showing in Device Manager? Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters. What is listed ? Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? tunna Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Hi thanks for replying and being understanding. I wasn't expecting someone to be so abrupt. I'm no computer genius but I did check for manuals before I started. I had no choice but to clean inside because the fan was so dirty. Unfortunately the Equium series is quite complicated to disassemble. I've checked the device manager again and everything there is ok. No marks at all next to the adapter. For some reason my mouse doesn't work now and it was fine before and I've not touched anything. Quote
KenB Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 For some reason my mouse doesn't work now If you mean the mouse pad - you can always plug in a USB mouse and use that. You said in the other thread that the wireless is switched on. There is a physical switch on most laptops ( not Fn + F8 ) Does this give an LED indication that it is on ? tunna Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 The LED isn't lit up on the physical switch even though it's in the on position. The wire from the switch to the mother board is in place as far as I can see. Although, maybe I need to tape the wires? Quote
KenB Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Is there a possibility that the connections to this switch are being shorted out ? I think your best course of action would be to go inside and check the switch - if any part of the joining wires is touching any other part of the circuit it will short the switch. If you have a meter check both sides of the switch for a voltage. In the off position there will be a voltage on one side only. In the on position there will be the same voltage on both sides of the switch. Is this the case ? tunna Posted June 21, 2012 Author Posted June 21, 2012 I don't have a meter checker. I know the connections are not as tight as before. They were quite hard to disconnect but when I link the components back up they're more lose for sure and I don't know why. Quote
KenB Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 A voltmeter would tell you if the switch was working properly or not. I found this on Amazon for £2-89 and free postage click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! tunna Posted June 21, 2012 Author Posted June 21, 2012 Brilliant I'll order that. The connections are quite loose compared to before. Could that be causing a problem and is there something I can use. Quote
KenB Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 the connections are quite loose compared to before. This is probably the cause of your problem. Can you use aluminium foil to tighten the connections or squash the female connection a bit with a pair of long-nose pliers? ( I am not totally sure what your specific connections look like ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! tunna Posted June 21, 2012 Author Posted June 21, 2012 They look like the end of phone cables. Can I upload pictures here from my phone. I could take a pic for you? Quote

tunna Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 Hi I've disassembled it again with a clear head. I think I realise what's happened. The wireless cable is damaged so needs replacing. I don't know what's the name of it, but its the white cable with the blue bits. The mouse is working again. I think it just needed tightening and securing. Quote
tunna Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 The white cable at the bottom with the blue bits. Any idea what it's called lol Quote
KenB Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Sorry - the photo isn't detailed enough for me to make out the connections. Did you actually disconnect the wires from the switch itself ? tunna Posted June 23, 2012 Author Posted June 23, 2012 Sorry I'll take another picture tomorrow. The cables were loose but the end that was on the motherboard was damaged. So I think it needs replacing. Quote

It isn't mine but I need to replace the white cable on the right. Haven't found one on amazon and eBay yet prob cz I'm not using the right name? Quote
KenB Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 but the end that was on the motherboard was damaged. Is it possible to get a close-up of the damaged end and m/board connection ? I was assuming that the lose connection was at the switch. Your link was just to a general Google search. tunna Posted June 23, 2012 Author Posted June 23, 2012 (edited) No not at all. I'll disassemble it tonight and take the picture :) Sorry the link didn't work...I posted the wrong one. Here's the cable I need to replace on the right... Edited June 23, 2012 by tunna Quote
KenB Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 The one on the right is a ribbon cable. Does the connector look like this ? http://www.mcmelectronics.com/content/productimages/s4/27-2745.jpg If it does - and you have spare cable - you can just replace the connector. You simply lie it across the cable and compress the end to make the connections. You would need to count the number of connections needed to make sure you got the right replacement. tunna Posted June 23, 2012 Author Posted June 23, 2012 The connector is a little black plastic thing. It's not identical to that one. Sorry I still haven't taken a pic to show you the damage. Been a hectic weekend so far! Where can I find the cable? I don't seem to be having much luck online. Quote
KenB Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 I will need a closeup of it please. Also - what does the other end of the cable connect to. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
tunna Posted June 23, 2012 Author Posted June 23, 2012 Ok no problem. One end connects to the motherboard and the other end is connected to the physical wireless switch which is at the front next to the right speaker. Quote
