windows 10 problem with hdmi audio switching back to 3.5mm jacks front/back

Hi, hdmi audio works but switching back to audio through 3.5mm headphone/speaker jacks front and back won't work anymore. a few weeks ago connected my hdmi cable to bigger tv, watched movie with video and audio through hdmi. when i switched hdmi cable back to regular monitor, audio through 3.5mm jacks would not work. system settings says my headphones are disabled and disconnected and no device is connected. tried updating drivers, many, many other possible solutions to no avail. recently reconnected hdmi cable to tv, audio output is fine, just not through 3.5mm jacks front or back????Sy
