Norton 2009 upgrade & Zonealarm

I received a notice that I'm eligible for a free upgrade to the 2009

version of Norton antivirus. After downloading it, the install

couldn't continue until I remove ZoneAlarm. I'm not happy with

Norton - It takes does things I don't want it to do, slows down the

computer, etc. Will switch to a different antivirus when the contract

is up, but have about 6 months to go on it.

 

Questions - if I do remove ZoneAlarm, can I reinstall it after the

Norton upgrade and have both apps work properly? I remember a

previous issue such as this with these 2 apps.

Is it really necessary to upgrade Norton? I'm running the

2008 version.

This is what I have done in the past:

Uninstall ZA, install NAV and then reinstall ZA.

Have had no problems.

 

The 2009 version should be much less of a resource hog.

I'm currently testing Norton's NIS 2009 which has it's own firewall

and so far have not seen any significant slowdown on my test PC.

 

You can keep 2008, but to continue to get security updates

you will need to buy a subscription which cost as much

if not more than 2009 does with rebates.

Assuming you're upgrading to NAV 2009, not NIS 2009 or Norton 360 2009:

 

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all

NAV 2008 and LiveUpdate via Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program

(or Control Panel | Programs and Features, if using Classic view).

 

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,

browsing; reading email; chatting) except #3 through #5 below until your

anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated!

 

2a. Download this removal tool to your desktop:

2b. Double-click on the saved download to run the tool.

 

4. Reboot *twice*.

 

5. Temporarily disable ZA *and then* enable the Windows Firewall!

 

6. Install NAV 2009.

 

7. Reboot twice.

 

8. Disable the Windows Firewall then re-enabled ZA.

Why continue punishing yourself with this resource hog? There is no reason

to wait, get rid of this application now!

For the average homeuser, the Windows Firewall in XP does a fantastic job

at its core mission and is really all you need if you have an 'real-time'

anti-virus program, [another firewall on your router or] other edge

protection like SeconfigXP and practise Safe-Hex.

 

The windows firewall deals with inbound protection and therefore does not

give you a false sense of security. Best of all, it doesn't implement lots

of nonsense like pretending that outbound traffic needs to be monitored.

 

Activate and utilize the Win XP built-in Firewall; Uncheck *all* Programs

and Services under the Exception tab.

That's a common viewpoint. Many people feel that they want to continue

using Norton for the period they've paid for. But it's not a good

view, when there are freeware choices like Avast! that are better than

Norton. If I were in your shoes, I'd change to Avast! now, and that's

what I recommend that you do.

I have same problem but have been using an earlier version of Zone Alarm. I

tried the approach suggested and it did not work for me. The Zone Alarm forum

indicates that there is no known fix

Any further comments?

Well, I removed ZoneAlarm, installed NAV 2009 then reinstalled ZA.

Guess what happened? Computer froze up! Seemed to be deadlocked. Had

to get a PC tech in (cost alot!) to get it working again. Seems NV

'09 and ZA aren't compatible at all.

 

The end result is NAV is now gone from my computer. Will get another

AV - one that doesn't try to run your world!!

I have now got Norton 2007 from Symantec and have re-installed with my old

version of ZA (5.5) and will update neither of them as they are now working

in my enivironment.

Symantec have now admitted that they have a problem and will address it next

year.

I can provided more details but can not guarantee what I have done will work

in everyobne's environment. All I suggest is that you keep hammering Symantec

until you get them to accept that they are the cause of your grief

Well, NAV is gone! It's been removed from my PC; no easy chore as

after it was uninstalled over 200 Symantec files were still there.

Once it was removed the response time speeded up dramatically.

ZoneAlarm is working fine and I downloaded and installed Avira which

has much less overhead and is less of a resource hog while still doing

what I want it to. Never again with NAV!

 

I also contacted their tech support as I felt a refund should be

forthcoming for the 2 months I'm not using it that were left on my

contract. Of course that request was refused. I'd also paid out $$

for a pc tech consultant to come in to get the pc working again.

Symantec caused all this trouble and expense but offered absolutely no

goodwill gesture. You can be sure I'll NEVER be their customer

again!!

Finished the test of Symantec's NIS 2009 I had mentioned in my previous

post.

Did not notice any significant slowdown of the PC.

 

However the last thing I tried was to disable the Norton firewall and

install ZA.

As you have found out ZA and NIS don't get along very well and the test PC

would not even boot. Recovered by using my Image Backup made before the

test was started.

 

Currently evaluating NAV 2009 (which does not have it's own firewall)

and will see if installing ZA causes any problems.
