I have a very strange graphics issue. All the graphics go 'sketchy' with horizontal lines (as if a kid was drawing a speeding car with lines off the back) over sections of the screen. See below...

I have tried running updates etc. and checking drivers but sadly nothing has resolved it, even as im typing this the little face icons and adverts all have the 'sketchy' issue...

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

I have Intel's series 4 built in graphics and am running the Windows 8 trial (this problem has been with me since windows Vista and Windows 7 etc)

If it helps, it isn't always sketchy but is at some points every day and the worst programs for causing it is the built in windows picture viewer and outlook - I don't run games so cant comment on that side of it.

When I scroll a page it doesn't remove the sketchiness but when I mouse over a sketchy icon for example, it does clear it up as it seems to re-render the icon as a moused over icon.

The computer is a Dell laptop and the processor is Pentium dual CPU T3400 @2.16Ghz with 3Gb RAM

Thanks,

Paul

Just to confirm, the black boxes on the image were me blocking out personal info, the best place on that image to see the graphic issue are at the top on the Outlook ribbon. Thanks, Paul.

Hi Paul and welcome to ExTS

the black boxes on the image were me blocking out personal info,

I realised that :)

If you had not have said that you had this problem prior to Win 8 I would have suspected that as it is only a Beta version.

Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc .........ENTER

Click the + next to "Display Adapters"

Are there any yellow exclamation marks / red Xs ?

If not - try right click on device and un-install.

Re-boot your machine.

Windows will locate "New" hardware and re-install the drivers for your Graphics.

What are the risks of installing Windows 8?

Windows 8 Release Preview is stable and has been thoroughly tested, but it’s not the finished product. Your PC could crash and you could lose important files. You should back up your data and you shouldn't test Windows 8 Release Preview on your primary home or business PC. You might also encounter problems like:

  • Software that doesn’t install or work correctly, including antivirus or security programs.
  • Printers, video cards, or other hardware that doesn’t work.
  • Difficulty accessing corporate or home networks.
  • Files that might become corrupted.

You should carefully balance the risks and rewards of trying out the Windows 8 Release Preview before you install it.

Hi KenB,

Thanks for the advice although sadly already tried that, even forcing an install of the latest driver released by intel in March this year hasn't helped. Nothing seems to be correcting it, could not enough RAM be the issue? I'm running standard stuff, Chrome, Word, Outlook etc, nothing over heavy but RAM is usually over 50% used constantly. As you may of guessed im kind of clutching at straws here as nothing 'normal' has diagnosed it? have you seen graphic issues appear like mine before? Very strange in my opinion. Any other ideas at all??? PS: external display doesn't change anything either, lines still there. :-(

The lines are almost certainly down to the Graphics chip. This could be faulty.

The chip does utilise RAM and it could be linked with that.

How much RAM is installed?

Start > Right click on Computer > Properties

Win 8 needs a minimum of 1GB.
