Hi All,

We are running a small company and have over all strength of around 40 users. Till this time we were not introduced any kind of security or policies . But recently we faced some data loss related issue and planning to secure network now.Right now the network topology as mentioning below.

Using windows Xp,windows 7.(laptops and desktops).

From ISP the connection leads to a Netgear router. ( this router itself act as DHCP and allocating IP's to the PC;s connected). From router directly connected to a 48 port based switch . and our 40 users are connected to this.

Also we have enabled wifi for laptop users..

So i need a detailed help regrading what and all action steps i can take to make bettor this network.

1) whether i need a DNS server ? and if it is what impact it is going to make on this network or how it will help us in future ?

2) dhcp server ?

3) Active directory ?

4 ) a new cisco router ?

5) firewall ?

Also i need to monitor the internet usage.

whether i can manage these 40 systems with the help of centralized system?

Please help me to resolve my all quires as soon as possible.

Hi and welcome to ExTS

I have no experience of setting up a business network - just home networks.

If you are using a simple router and switch as each machine accesses the internet the system will slow down - unless you have previously spoken with your ISP and they can provide the extra bandwidth / connection speed needed.

I suspect you will need to set-up a server-based network - but this is out of my area of knowledge.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi ,

Thanks for the reply dear Friend. IF you know something about the Server based network please explain ..

You need more than a DIY network. A Windows server, something like a Cisco router, login/ password for all your users rather than straight access to Internet, perhaps a hardware firewall, and perhaps client/server antivirus protection. Plus server based backup I should think.

To be honest, you need to talk to someone that can supply, install and maintain a system for you. Ask two or three small local companies and take it from there.

Following up on the last two posts. While your business may be considered a small company, creating a network that you describe is a genuine hands on IT project. It is not something that you can expect to resolve on a forum. You will need to hire or otherwise find someone who can do this for you on site. It is pretty clear that at very least you are going to have to have access to a proper server.
