peem Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Hi, first post so be gentle!! I am running a Compaq Presario, XP sp3. I am increasingly getting a pop-up titled 'unresponsive script'. I have googled it but it all seems a bit long winded for me. Anyway yesterday I booted up in Firefox safe mode with all add-ons disabled and there was no pop-up. Today though, again in safe mode, there it is again. To add to that, all I had to do was click continue and all was well. Now it has to be clicked three or four times until it disappears and I can carry on. I don't know if it is relevant but 'Task Manager' has also taken to needing numerous clicks before it will close or minimise. I hope I have given you enough to go on. Quote

peem Posted July 1, 2012 Author Posted July 1, 2012 Hello KenB and thanks for the welcome. Yes I have seen that before, but quite some time ago. I do not have Webroot Spy Sweeper. I have now changed the integer number and will see how it goes. Unfortunately I have to leave now so I will get back to you and let you know one way or the other how thnigs are. I will also go through the other options provided if needed. Thanks again. Quote
KenB Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Let's know how you get on - no doubt we will be able to offer one or two other suggestions :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
peem Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 Ok I've tried it a few times now and it hasn't returned. Happy days!;) One question more though please. I don't know if it is anything to do with the changes I have made but it took a full five minutes from me clicking on Firefox to it actually opening. That's never happened before. So the question, do you think the two are linked? I am not trying to squeeze another problem in here. I am prepared to research it (and probably fail!!). Just wondered. Thanks once again. Quote
KenB Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Ok I've tried it a few times now and it hasn't returned. Do you know which suggestion worked for you ? I am not trying to squeeze another problem in here Squeeze away :) Try F-F again with add-ons disabled. If it is opening faster - try enabling them one at a time until you find the problem one. peem Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 Sorry, of course I should have said. It was just changing the integer number from nought to 20. Which, after my last post, I changed back to nought ( should've tried that first!!),to see what happened. Up came the pop-up, so now it's back to 20. Ok I'll try the add-ons thing and get back to you. Quote

peem Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 Well here's a strange thing, to me at least. I disabled the add-ons and rebooted. 37 seconds to open F/F. Absolute heaven to me, (I know, how sad is that). I enabled them one bye one and basically the opening times got better and better!! Down to 35, 17, 10, 7 and finally 5 seconds. SOooo, how come there doesn't seem to be a rogue one in there? Not that I'm bothered mind you. Quote
KenB Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 SOooo, how come there doesn't seem to be a rogue one in there? Nothing as strange as computers :) Is it still OK ? peem Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 Unfortunately not. It's been about 24hours since I've booted up and it is worse. Five minutes 50 seconds to open F/F. So what I thought I'd do is disable the add-ons again only this time only boot up once and leave them all off. Then only re-enable them at very infrequent times. Sort of give them time if you know what I mean. What do you think? Quote
Plastic Nev Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Hi, yes in Kens absence, do carry on doing it that way, enable one each time you reboot, hopefully that should then show up which is the problem. peem Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 Hello and thank you Plastic Nev. Ok I wont bother you until either all the add-ons are re-enabled or I have the bad'un. On this boot-up it is just the second one to be enabled, and all is going well, and I'm going to take my time. Thanks again and I hope to speak to you soon(ish). :) Quote
KenB Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Keep us informed - there will be one that causes the problem :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
peem Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 Hello again. This is frustrating me to bits. I have given up trying to find an add-on culprit. Let me explain. I have tried disabling them all and as I said previously, the browser opened in about 7-10 seconds. Then I added the first one and it was about 10-15 seconds. Then added the second one and I was back to the original problem so I disabled that one and added the third. Still the same problem! So since I spoke to you last I have only added one per day and the problem has persisted. When I say one per day, if the problem was still there I disabled the add-on and added the next one after an hour or two. Yesterday I booted up with one enabled, just to see what would happen. It took nine minutes 5 seconds to open. Worst ever. Just now I booted up with none enabled, clicked on F/F and it started to open at the 20 second mark, then apart from the toolbar and the system tray, there was only a blank white screen for 2minuets 20 seconds. Oh in the bottom left there was the message, 'waiting for searchcdn. info'. When I finally got in I came straight to this site. Another 2 minute wait with the message in the bottom left, 'waiting for freepchelp.com'. I know these messages are normal so I mention them only to tell you what is happening. Even as I type this my cursor is changing into what I can only describe as an 'I' and hangs for a few seconds. I hope you can understand all of this and I haven't rambled off in my frustration. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Hi, OK, from your last post I am now beginning to suspect there may be a little more wrong than we first thought. Once you get your browser up and running I would like you to run a scan with Malwarebytes antimalware (MBAM) If you already have it installed, make sure it is updated first and then run a quick scan, If you don't as yet have MBAM please click this link= http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Go to the "Products" tab and click the "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free" to download and then install the free version. (it will take you to a mirror site, that is normal) Once it has been updated after the install, run a quick scan with it. After running the scan, a note pad page will open with the scan results, please copy and paste them in your next reply. Thanks, Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? maynardvdm Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Hi How much RAM do you have? When opening F/F does it take long to open the program or load the webpage? What connection do you have? peem Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 Hi maynardvdm, Just a reminder, PC Experience: Beginner. :D. Thought I'd say that because I wasn't sure of all the answers to your questions. 1.99GHz 448mb of RAM F/F itself takes the times I've been mentioning. That said the webpages take about as long too. I believe the connection is DSL, (through the telephone line right?). Funny thing is, I'm going out soon so thought I'd try one more time before leaving, and it took only 1min 30 sec to open, and no hanging. I still haven't enabled my add-ons. It's just sometimes ok and others, absolutely hopeless. Thank you all for helping. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Hi again, OK for the Malwarebytes, nothing showing so unless something else shows up, for now I think we can say it doesn't look like malware is causing the problem One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned is Hardware acceleration, Click on tools and the options, then advanced, under the general tab, and in the browsing section, is there a tick in the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"? If there is try removing it, if there isn't, put one in. Just one of those "I wonder if?" moments here, but might be connected. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? KenB Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I believe the connection is DSL, Just butting in again ......... I assume you have broadband ? peem Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 Thanks all for still being here. Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. First, when I booted up this time (again 9min) the unresponsive script popped up again. One click and it seems to have disappeared once more. I checked the integer number and it is still 20. Nev, that was checked, I've unchecked it. I'll see how it goes. KenB, butt in as much as you like!! :D Do I have broadband? As opposed to dial-up do you mean? If so, yes I have. Also I did a speed test using that very site about two days ago. I did one again at your request. The results are: Two days ago = Ping 26ms, d/l 16.85mbps, u/l 0.92mbps. Today = Ping 71ms, d/l 0.22mbps, u/l0.86mbps. These readings mean nothing to me but I will say that today everything has been oh so much slower than usual. So slow in fact that I have been getting a pop-up telling me that the sites I have been looking for have taken too long to reply, or something like that. Including this forum and the speedtast page. Quote
KenB Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Butting in again :) d/l 16.85mbps This is excellent d/l 0.22mbps This is rubbish !! No wonder you are getting error messages. Which ISP are you with ? You may want to give them a ring and ask if they are restricting your usage. Give them the 2 readings. nearly 17 Megabits per second as opposed to 0.22 !! If you d/l a lot of films say - you may well have gone over the limit set by the ISP. peem Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 I am with plusnet. Have been for over a year now. No I don't d/l any films or play games or anything like that. I did once watch an hour long tv programme but that was many months ago. Ok I'll ring them in the next couple of days and see what they say. I'll let you know. Oh by the way is it normal when having all this slowness etc, for the computer, after about 1/2 an hour, to start behaving itself and go zipping along? Because that is what mine does! Quote
