Disk Defragmenter error message

When I try to analyze or defragment my computer files I get the following

message: Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on

the volume: (C:). Please run chkdsk /f.

I don't know what has caused this, because the last time I defraged it

worked fine, then this time I get this message. Can someone please advise me

how to correct this error and tell me what has happened? Thanks

You may just need to reboot for checkdsk to run and then you can

defragment the drive.

I tried your suggestion of rebooting for chkdsk to run and it did NOT help.

What is chkdsk? Any other suggestions?

Chkdsk scans an input drive for errors and optionally fixes them.

If the drive happens to be the system drive, and if you select fixing

errors, chkdsk must run before Windows is loaded. It needs full access to

such a disk.

That would likely be because you hadn't scheduled it to run. I'll give you

one method for that next.

The only thing you can do, and what you should do to clear this error, is to

follow the direction and run chkdsk. It stands for Check Disk.

Go to start, run, and type cmd, then press enter. A command prompt box

will open. In that, type "chkdsk /f" and press enter. Note the space,

and don't enter the quotes.

Now, you should get a message that chkdsk can't get control of the drive and

ask you if you'd like to schedule a check at next boot (Y/N). Answer with

a Y. Chkdsk will end.

Type the word "exit" to close the command prompt box.

Now, reboot, and chkdsk will run before Windows actually loads. Let it run.

When Windows restarts, you can run the defragmenter.
