Guest Dan Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I just noticied that you now need to have Windows XP and/or Windows Vista to use Genuine check for downloads and this never used to be a problem. Heck, I even have Genuine check with my Windows 98 Second Edition but it is apparently no longer good enough and that goes for Windows 2000 Professional also which still gets security updates by Microsoft. I use Office XP Professional in 98 Second Edition and just manually update it because the office update tool will not work in 98 Second Edition. http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/AutomaticUpdates.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=e0175119-9a5b-44c3-b1de-9b2a9aa6cff6&Error=6&sGuid=73b74a3f-94fd-46ac-aae8-3548ba1837b6 Validation is not currently supported for this version of Windows or for this non-Microsoft operating system. It appears that you are using an operating system that is not currently supported by the validation process. Only the following operating systems are currently supported: * Windows XP Home Edition * Windows XP Professional * Windows XP Starter Edition * Windows XP Media Center Edition * Windows XP Tablet PC Edition * Windows Vista [0x80080206] Note: I just tried to download genuine Microsoft software with Internet Explorer 6 sp1 in Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition and it will download fine but sadly no longer with Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.17 which I used to use for all Microsoft Downloads in 98 Second Edition.
Guest MEB Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Re: Windows and Genuine Update A kludge WAS to go to the page that needs it, start the process, let it work until it stops or shows the Unsupported OS junk. Download the Genuine Check [save target as][or use the one in the temp folder] run it , let it work, reload the page that requires it and cut and paste what you need from the offline/downloaded run... OR a few pages required you load the page two or three times for it to work properly... Not sure if these work anymore.... -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org a Peoples' counsel _ _ ~~ "Dan" <Dan@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:08364519-20E9-42AF-903D-B5311417389D@microsoft.com... | I just noticied that you now need to have Windows XP and/or Windows Vista to | use Genuine check for downloads and this never used to be a problem. Guest Dan Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Re: Windows and Genuine Update This used to work MEB but as far as I know no longer works for the older operating systems. At least you can use IE if you have to go through a genuine check for Windows 98 Second Edition. MEB, do you know if anyone is still breaking Windows 2000 Professional patches for Internet Explorer 6 and applying them to Windows 98 Second Edition or are people too concerned about potential *.dll h_ll? Make sure you understand these are NOT official {for the most} Microsoft files. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF these are used, then your *best* support will come from those forums.
