Trying to rescue a corrupted video DVD

This is a DVD-R that I recorded over 10 years ago from live TV. It contains two much-valued science documentaries. When inserted in a player, the disk main menu is displayed normally, and the second programme plays OK. But the first programme, after a lot of disk access chatter, freezes after a few seconds, then proceeds with a lot of long pauses and stuttering in video and sound. I've tried the disk in another player and on a PC and get the same kind of result. The disk surface appears to be in good condition, but I suspect a portion of the recording layer has degraded.
