Guest Andy_XP_Devotee Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Hi, again, everybody. I've spent way too much time today trying to find the answer to this question. I would REALLY appreciate somebody telling me how to do this. I want to disable/turn off the Windows ToolTips. I used to have them off, but I thought I'd give them a try again a few months ago. Some of them are very handy, but most of them are just clutter, and a good handful of them actually get in the way. So I'd like to turn them off again. But I cannot remember how! None of the Windows Help/Support/Knowledge Base info sources has had anything about this. (WHEN is Microsoft going to wise up and let Google run their Search programs! We'd all like Microsoft ever so much better afterwards.) Thank you VERY much, Andy

Guest Andy_XP_Devotee Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Re: ToolTips getting on my nerves. Thank you, Louis. This is great. But I'm positive I didn't have to fool with the Registry when I turned the ToolTips off and then, later, back on. It was one of those times when I just ticked some box that probably said "Hide/Show ToolTips" without ever thinking that I'd never be able to find it again! Still, the Google searching hasn't turned up anything as simple and direct as what I was imagining, so now I'm really curious how the heck I did this. I'll use your Registry changes if I can't find the tick box. Thanks, Andy

Look in the left-hand column, number 11: "Disable All" (Balloon Tips) Direct link: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/disableall.reg Works like a charm. :-)
Guest Andy_XP_Devotee Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Re: ToolTips getting on my nerves. You're right, Olf. I should use Google. My brother tells me the same thing. I just don't yet have it quite all the way in my head that Google is good for things like this. When needing technical answers for Microsoft products would *seem* like the MS Help & Support and Knowledge Databases would be light years ahead of anything you might find via an all-purpose internet search engine like Google. But Google wins, hands-down, everytime! Thanks for the kick, Andy
Guest Andy_XP_Devotee Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Re: ToolTips getting on my nerves. Daave, thanks for the link to Kelly's Korner. I found tons of good stuff there. And, yes, these are the registry changes needed. (They're the same ones found through Google by Louis above, too.) Seems like this is the way to go--I'm getting this from several different sources--so I just made the changes and will re-start in a minute. The darn thing was that I used Microsoft's Tweak UI to disable the Task Bar Ballon Tips (which were, in fact, the most annoying bunch of pop-up tips). But the Tweak UI didn't work. So I was happy to go ahead and get into the Registry. Thanks for your help here, Andy

Guest Andy_XP_Devotee Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Re: ToolTips getting on my nerves. SOMETHING SEEMS SERIOUSLY ODD HERE. Daave, Louis, maybe somebody else--you still around? I changed the Registry values. Then re-booted my machine. And I *still* had all the darn ToolTips. The Task Bar Balloon Tips, too. So I checked the Registry to make sure I'd not missed anything. Everything looked fine. The values that needed to be zeroed out all were. So I did another re-boot. But I've still got all the darn ToolTips. I'm kind of hoping that I'm missing something obvious here. I used Google to find a couple of quick tutorials on Registry edits, and I'm not seeing anything wrong or omitted. Still, I'm betting that this is one of those cases where I left out something so basic that everybody just assumed I'd done it. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks, Andy

Thanks, It sounds like you manually changed the registry. Perhaps something was off. Did you download and double-click the .reg file from the site I mentioned?

It is one of the options in TweakUI.

"Gary Brandenburg" wrote: Have you tried: Control Panel/Folder Options & look at the last setting under the *View* tab-"Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items"? ~Gary I checked that, Gary. I had it un-checked, so no luck there. I was curious, though, and checked the box to see what I'd get. What I got was MORE poppin' ToolTips! These were on the Start Menu items and some others. But thanks for your note. I *am* getting a really good sense of where all of the ToolTip controls are to be found. (As usual, they're scattered all over the place, which is not an unusual approach for the folks at Microsoft.) But there has got to be something I'm forgetting here. Maybe I'm too tired to see it right now. Let me know if anything occurs to you. Your help would be put to good use for sure! Thanks, Andy
