Hi all!

I've been having trouble with my Windows 7 Acer Aspire 5738Z running incredibly slowly for the past few weeks. It's a constant problem and CPU usage is ridiculous. Right now I have a Youtube video running in one window of my browser, and I'm typing this in another, and CPU is between 92 and 100%. The only other programs running are Sticky Notes and Microsoft Security Essentials.

I've run a full Security Essentials scan and a Malwarebytes scan recently to see if it might have been some malware causing the problem, but it's done no good. Could anyone possibly advise on what I might try? If you need any info on specs/processes running and so on, please do ask.

Many thanks in advance for your help! :D

The problem is probably hardware related rather than in the software. (probably not definitely.) It may be a simple heat issue caused by excessive dust etc. It also may be a heat issue regarding your CPU overheating. Of course it may not be heat related at all and still be a hardware problem. It would be helpful if you supplied whatever specs you may have on that machine as the series seems to have been manufactured with a few different specs.

Cheers for your reply!

Can you let me know what specs I should look for/provide? Not sure exactly what's relevant. Where would I find all that info?

Many thanks!

Hi and welcome to ExTS

CPU at 100% is common but, in my experience, the causes are so varied that it is difficult to locate the problem.

Are you running a 32 or 64 bit system ?

CTRL+ALT+DEL > Processes

Can you please list all processes that are using over 50,000k

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Just a note, in Windows 7, using the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys you may get a blue screen with a list of choices, click "Task Manager", when that opens click the processes tab for the information KenB asks for.

Alternatively, you can also press the windows flag key and the "R" key, that will open the "Run" box, type in or copy

taskmgr

Then Paste into the "Run" box and click OK.

That will also open the task manager.
