PEV Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Hi all I am currently in contact with some of you on the 'operating systems' help topics of this forum. However to keep things getting too complicated I am also posting here. I have been in discussion regarding backing up my the files etc on my PC should anything go wrong such as hard drive failure, my PC get stolen or house burn down (Heaven forbid!) I have been made aware of 'cloud on line back up' and on Googling 'on line back up' have found masses of different options on offer. Can anyone elaborate on this please as on one hand I'm looking at an external hard drive storage but the remote back up seems a great option---or is it? Ray Quote
Synapse Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I think it is worth saying the online backup is for files, not for a full disc backup. Perhaps you already knew, but I didn't see it in the other thread, which moved quickly to your backup needs from how much is on your original [possibly failing] disc. Back to online backup.... I personally use Dropbox. It is free up to I think 2GB of data, which perhaps isn't enough. It is great for files that may need to accessed elsewhere or by other people, and is a good way to back up. For me, it works to allow me to write essays (that's me being a student), and access them at uni without messing with USB sticks. Everything is automatic, you don't have to think about it - I like that! Paid backup services in my opinion are good at what they do, most are reliable and client software works well. Perhaps best used with a fast internet connection. For disk imaging, use an external drive. Bottom line I think is that both can be used together for different purposes, but for major PC backups, large files, programs etc an external drives are a better option. That's just my opinion :-) I think it is worth you posting your thoughts on what needs backing up on your PC. Quote
