laptop not connecting to external monitor

Hello! For some reason my laptop is not recognizing my external monitor that I've been using with this laptop for about 9 months. I did all the computer updates I could find, made sure all the cords were plugged in and even switched out the hdmi cord but my monitor still flashes "no signal: HDMI"Help!
