1317 Error when trying to reinstall .Net Framework

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've posted this message in another thread, but it appears to have

stumped the folks overseeing that one. So I am appealing to anyone who can

help.

I've been having problems with my McAfee virus protection and firewall...

they don't work... OUCH. The problems have been traced to MSXML and .Net

Framework. Both have ceased responding.

Some real good links were given to me previously and I followed the ones I

could comprehend. But they have led me to an extension of my problem which is

where I'm stumped.

After identifying the .NET Framework installs I had and then using a removal

tool recommended by one of the links I attempted to reinstall the same

versions of the .NET Framework and ran into this problem:

When I try to install dotnetfx.exe as administrator in safe mode it starts

just fine but then after extraction states that Microsoft .NET Network Setup

Failed. Consult Product Support.

When I try to install it with my user account, which has full permissions

for Program Files, I get the error message:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Setup

Error 1317. An error occurred while attempting to create the directory:

E:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

I don't know why they are trying to create a new IE folder, one already

exists.

I tried changing the name of the IE folder but got the same message.

Would someone PLEASE help? Or is this a problem that you can't figure you?

Thanks.

Hi, I've posted this message in another thread, but it appears to have

stumped the folks overseeing that one. So I am appealing to anyone who can

help because for whatever reason that thread has gone dead.

Again, thank you very, very much in advance to anyone kind enough to assist

us with this terrible problem that has caused our entire McAfee to cease

functioning. We all know how important our virus protection and firewall is.

Well 99% of youre problem is due to mcafee software...Either way,if you

ran the .NET uninstaller tool, you also need to type in run:Microsoft.NET

in the new window, locate the .NET folder & delete it,exit when thru, return to

run, type:temp In new window, edit select all delete all, exit.Return to

run,type:

CLEANMGR Run disk clean up,restart pc.Back in xp,run, type:msiexec

/unregister

Return to run, type:msiexec /regserver Retry .NET install.

First and foremost get rid of McAfee Not very compatible. Secondly read the following

RE: 1317 Error when trying to reinstall .Net Framework

Hi Andrew, thank you so much for responding.

I tried the cleanup and the msiexec suggestions you gave me. I believe I

entered them correctly with a space between the c and forward slash as well

as deeting the Network folder, however upon attempting to install

dotnetfx.exe I once again received the error:

Error 1317. An error occurred while attempting to create the directory:

E:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

Again, I don't know what that means as that folder already exists.

When I try to install as Administrator I get the message:

"The administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

My regular user account IS the one which set up the PC in the first place.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm using XP home.

I've had that McAfee for a long time now. I got it with my MSN so I figured

it was fine.

I tried the tool that was in the article that Peter mentioned, but there is

no longer any .NET files to extract. I'm just stuck on the reinstall.

This is really frustrating.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Re: 1317 Error when trying to reinstall .Net Framework

Hi Peter,

Thank you for responding.

I read the article and believe I understood most of it fairly well. The main

thing I got from it that related to the 1317 error I'm dealing with is the

removal too.

The thing is that we have already used a Microsoft cleanup tool and there

are no .NET files to remove.

I mentioned that where I'm at now is that when I attempt to install as

Administrator in safe mode I get a message:

The administrator has set policies against this installation.

When I try to install with my user name that originally set up Windows I get

the 1317 error regarding not being able to create the Internet Explorer

folder in program files.

I am so stuck.

What am I missing?

Thanks again for helping.
