Dell 521 on boot up today mouse no longer working. (XP Media Centre)

Have tried alternate mouse .. and being an optical, it lights up ... but no movement of cursor.

Swapped over positions of all USB devices .. and Keyboard works in all sockets .. so USB controller assumed OK.

Went into BIOS on boot up and both front & back USB ports are 'On'

When I plug in the 'spare' mouse - it gets detected, and even the ready for use message .. but still no movement.

Not some odd keyboard combination I have hit accidentally ?

Any suggestions ?

Have you looked in device manager? any exclamation or question marks?

Click the arrow to the left of Mice and other pointing devices, double click on whatever comes up, then select the driver tab, first try "update driver".

If nothing better available, try a system restore back to when you know it was working.

Being the mouse, I am reluctant to try uninstalling the mouse drivers at this stage. Besides, it looks like windows found drivers and installed them when you tried the spare mouse, it just didn't work.

Been doing some fiddling ..

Under "Mice & other pointing devices" .. HID compliant mouse shown with yellow warning.

I tried de-installing driver ... when I plug mouse back in, I get the audible 'bing' it's detected.

Then messages ..

> Found new hardware

> Installing driver

>Problem occurred during install hardware may not work propoerly

If I now go into HID compliant mouse ... it says

"Windows loaded device driver but cannot fine h/w device"

The first thing that comes to mind is to try a diffrent mouse.

It is possible the mouse has failed or developed a fault.

Or try and uninstall the drivers or roll back and see if that works.

Hi ... Jelly Bean .... I did say in line 2 of description that is what I did ... :)

Looks like next step will be system roll back ... I'll give that a go.

BTW ... in your profile it says you are from "Tycores" is that the same place as Tycroes, near Pantyffynnon ? .... or is Tycores a different place.
