Help me recover some files please

So i lost power last night and it would appear that my computer's registry has become corrupted and it will not boot. i pulled the hard drive in order to back it up but when I went to copy the files in the documents folder i found that they were all labeled as being there but when i went to copy them they wouldnt copy.i have tried resetting the computer while saving the files but it didnt work. if i reset the computer without saving files will i be able to retrieve them later?
