Guest Dave Porter Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Hi Everyone, One of the sites I look after is running Win2003 server with a 512K ADSL1 connection that is going! ( Don't ask it just is :) ! ) It is being replaced with a 3G Mobile USB Wireless Internet Key Modem. Yesterday I tried to install it on the server ( it is a Huawei model that self installs it's software ), but it just didn't seem to 'see' it when plugged into USB on the server. So I installed it on on of the workstations for the time being ( ADSL is still active until the end of November ) My questions: 1) If I can't install it on the server, can I tell the rest of the network that the internet source is via this USB modem on the workstation somehow ? 2) How do I get around the fact that we will be loosing a Static IP address via the ADSL account and having a Dynamic IP address via the USB modem ? TIA, Dave Porter DJ Software
Guest JohnB Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Re: Win 2003 server switching internet To use it on the client, the client would need to act as a router. I don't believe you can install RRAS on XP or Vista. But you could use ICS. I had to do something similar to that once... provide internet access where there was none. I used a Linksys router that had a slot for a Sprint AirCard. It worked great. And, you could get a static IP from Sprint. That would be a better option for a business network. But if you're stuck with the Huawei device, maybe someone else here is familiar with that and can help.
