Guest Owen@7 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Quick question: 2003 Server Standard can only handle 4 processors. a quad core processor shows 4 processors in the task manager. So, can I install 2 quad core processors using 2003 Server Standard? Regards,

Nope. 4 single-core Processors or a single-quad-core. Here's some info: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winserver2003_editions.asp - Thee Chicago Wolf
Guest Cleve S. Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Re: quad processor Yes, it goes by processors not cores. You could have 4 quad core processors. I have a box running 2003 Server Standard with 2 quad core processors that shows all 8 cores in CPU Usage History. I believe Thee Chicago Wolf is incorrect. I had been under the assumption, as per what was stated on Thurrott's site, and was treating each of the cores on a "processor" and a physical processor. A bit of searching yielded the answer that yes, 4 processors, be they single, dual, or quad core, are supported, but no more. 4 Physical processors with up to 4 cores each will be recognized as 16 "processors". Of course, now that Intel is releasing 6-core processors, this may in fact no longer be true. 24 core server? Could possibly run Crysis at 60fps. Maybe. - Thee Chicago Wolf

Guest Edwin vMierlo [MVP] Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 Re: quad processor The licensing is per CPU, not cores, as detailed here: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/highlights/multicore.mspx The new term is "sockets" this to be more clear on the licensing, see the various editions on 2008 and the supported maximum "sockets" here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/compare-specs.aspx In the footnotes there are maximum number of "cores" mentioned for each of the editions. For Windows 2008 Standard Edition there is a maximum of 4 sockets, with a maximum of 32 cores. hope this helps, Rgds, Edwin.
