Defender

Windows Defender suddenly put an Icon near the Clock. It had an exclamation

mark. It asked to upgrade, but there were no upgrades. (It seemed to happen

when there was an automatic Update for Windows)

I turned Defender off to see if it would go away. Now I cannot find where to

turn it back on to see if the exclamation went away. looked in Ctrl Panel ,

Security and Firewall. Can you believe the Help Index does not have Defender

listed!?

The exclamation appears if defender has not been updaterd for a period of

time. Updating (even if there are no updates) turns the exclamation off

until it times out again.

Once you've gotten your machine free of any/all hijackware (cf.

....

1. Enable Automatic Updates => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

2. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any critical

security updates offered, Defender definitions update, and the Malicious

Software Removal tool. Follow all prompts.

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support

and comments.
