Im not sure if this thread has been created or not but what do you guys think about the new Windows 8 consumer preview pls comment below??

This has been discussed before ( somewhere here :) ) but it won't do any harm to open up the discussion again.

 

I don't have the "Consumer Preview" of Win 8.

 

This is a Beta version of the new OS.

You are advised that it could be "buggy" and may not run some of your hardware.

It also needs noting that if you do install it there is no way back to your previous OS.

Apparently the installation wipes even the recovery partition ( if you have one ) and the original OS.

So it is not a good idea to install this on your main system.

 

The reason MS release this is so that you can problem solve the software for them.

 

The release date for Win 8 is around October 26th

I've just installed a copy as a virtual O/S and I really like it.

 

The tiles take some getting used to, and much more use of the Windows key is making me think :)

 

I like the tiles, I wish I had a touchscreen laptop.

 

I've found some of the news articles read like a newspaper, which I again I like.

 

Under the hood it seems much like Windows of old, and easy enough to sort out settings etc.

 

I'm a dedicated Mac user, and I am considering moving back over to Windows due to the new interface.

Hum, I have lots of thoughts regarding Windows 8, but as yet not been in a position where I can try it out along with a touch screen, as it does appear on the surface at least, to be a system geared or aimed at touch screen technology.

My eventual aim is to build a system that is more to my needs than the present PB Imedia thing I presently own.

So bearing that in mind, a touch screen is going to be a part of the new system, however considering how much I like W7, I am actually considering two different hard drives with W7 on one and W8 on the other.

Depending then upon which I like the most, the other will become redundant and the drive arranged as either extension or backup to the system. However by the time the finances are in place to do so, things and therefore my plans, may have changed.

Basically watch this space, as I ain't sure how it will go yet.

 

To slightly digress a little, touch screens for PC or other home computers seem to be playing catch up as it is only in the last two years or a little more that they have been available, whereas the smart phone has had them a little longer. However various pub games and even retail tills have had touch screens for at least the last six to eight or more years.

When I first saw touch screens on pub games, I thought then, why is it not available for the home computer yet?

I've only used windows 8 briefly, but I don't really like it. It just doesn't make sense to me. I mean it might be the best thing ever for touch screens fair enough, and touch screens are great on tablets and phones and have loads of uses but I don't think they are beneficial for home user PCs and laptops.

 

On a regular PC, I'm either going to be constantly leaning across my desk, which can't be good for posture, or sitting right up close to my monitor which can't be good for my eyes. So this is what I don't get, why push a OS designed around touch screens when in reality a touch screen isn't going to be beneficial. I mean yes it would be great to have it as an optional built in feature but controlling it with a mouse and keyboard feels like its not supposed to be and as I've said i just don't think touch screen computers are ever going to be beneficial in the home.

 

Just my opinion, and its not that I'm against change, windows 7 is great, but I just don't get it.

The one thing I don't get is the fact that a touch screen in a vertical mode is ergonomically wrong, they should ideally be near flat and sloping up away from you and placed at a hight where arms and hands can be stretched over it to work with it, all touch screen till interfaces are at that angle and operators find them a whiz to work with. Set up like that, it is not too far down so therefore giving neck pain from looking down all the time, nor is it too high to be a problem for arms and hands, or too close for eye sight problems.
