How do I retrieve my lost data

I recently purchased a new laptop and used it for a few days without incident. I began receiving prompts that I was out of space on the one drive, so I tried to disable it from syncing everything. I don’t know what I did but it took all the desktop icons that are not part of windows off the desktop. At the same time the saved data from the Xbox games disappeared. I went looking for them in the user folder and noticed that there is not a desktop folder there. I found the files on the OneDrive but they do not work with the programs. The OneDrive desktop folder has all the stuff that went missing
