Why did my desktop files and shortcuts get exploded when I turned one drive syncing on?

I have had One drive for 10 years and this laptop for 4. I have always been confused about sync to one drive and have always (windows user since MSDOS 2 or 3) just backed up my files manually. But the other day the offering to turn on sync came up again and I (foolishly?) tried it, thinking, again, how hard can it be to have everything backed up and ready to be loaded onto a new computer.To my horror, it started eating up all my bandwidth (which is low) and my desktop icons suddenly exploded into new patterns with new folders and files all over. I quickly turned off sync temporarily and tried
