Shutting down

Often my mouse icon ‘locks’ so I cannot perform any functions including shutting the computer down. The only way I know to rectify the problem is switch the computer off either at the mains or tower and switch back on again but this is not ideal. Is there a safe, correct way of shutting the computer down without using the mouse icon to click on anything on screen? Edited July 22, 2012 by sighthound

Finding the root cause of your mouse problem would be ideal.

 

In the mean time use Ctrl-Alt-Delete. If this brings up options use the arrow keys to get to a shutdown option. Press Enter to select an option.

Many thanks. As far as cause is concerned I have got various problems with computer nowadays including it spontaneously shutting down. Its used a lot and is now 4 1/2 years old and I'm thinking it is really time to look at a replacement.

Take the panel off the side and inspect for dust.

At 4 years old this could be quite dusty.

 

If it is - suggest you get a can of compressed air and using short bursts - blow the dust away.

This may be best done outside.

Pay particular attention to fans and vents and in particular the Central Processor fan.

 

The random shutting down could be due to over-heating.

Re. your mouse problem:

Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ...........ENTER

Click the + next to mice and other pointing devices

Right click on the device > uninstall

 

Reboot.

 

Windows will locate new hardware and install the drivers again.
