Already in the business of asking for help to learn...

It is possible (and normal) that my desktop PC interferes with other RF gadgets?

Actually I can't use a particular mobile phone close to my PC (a SAGEM 401V) but not problem with any other mobiles. I can not receive calls or sms or send them. As soon as I move the mobile away, say 2 yards, works perfectly.

Also any laptop close to my PC works erratically (the touch pad doesn't work at all) and gets very slow and some applications doesn't work at all. In the other hand, in the desktop PC also a lot of things go "wild". But, again, moving the laptops a couple of yards away all work without problems.

I knew that some mobiles can not be used near any RF source and that SAGEM had problems in the past with some models but I didn't hear anything about the 401V.

I know that some radio amateurs transceivers if not adjusted properly can induce interferences but is not normal since it would not get a license if not properly adjusted (at least in Spain).

What can provoke an interference in a PC?

Tino.

Look up Spread Spectrum, Wiki here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_spectrum

It was explained to me by a very clever engineer and amateur radio enthusiast.

If you have an option to switch it on in the BIOS, try it.

I guess it is always possible to get interference, tracking it down and dealing with perhaps is a more difficult proposition! Swapping out electrically noisy fans could turn out to cost a few pounds........

Hi,

If you have a cheap PSU this may be the cause.

Decent PSUs ( Switched Mode ) will suppress RF ( Radio Frequency ) - a cheap one may not.

Wireless Phones can interfere with Routers - it may be possible that the router is interfering with the phone.

Try switching it off and use the phone nearby.

One other thing that is worth a look is to check all connections inside the PC, simply remove and replace each connector to ensure good connections, but also make sure there is a good earth connection from the mains power source.

I once had a loose IDE main cable connection not seated properly on the motherboard, which rather strangely interfered with my TV.

Ta again Synapse, KenB and Plastic Nev.

Well... The point of KenB seems that was the right one. Once switched off the wireless router by the telephone line the problem disappear. But still I can understand how could affect the laptops and the PC together.

The point of Synapse was good too, but I thought that what says in the link was in the past because since the use of SSB (LSB and USB) communication interferences due a large bandwidth is past history and also a save of energy that was taken mainly by the carrier band (or whatever is called in English).

And about the point of Plastic Nev... R Nev, I did check just in case but I am a maniac of building gadgets with a lot of final checks just in case and, so far, I did build all my PCs myself, so was not loose or wrong connections. It is an habit of lifetime since my first transceiver I made it in an open chassis with Rimlock valves, red series, and hand made coils to change frequency (I infer that you meant GB4TMY... In the top floor of this building is GB4KLF).

Thank you once more to all for your help. I feel guilty... I am abusing you... Because I am going to post a new problem that I am totally lost on it.

You can change the channel on which the router broadcasts.

This will probably solve your problem for you.

Posts the make and model number of the router if you wish to try this.

Why no? Let's go for it. We have already the "no", so let's go for the "yes"...

The wireless router is a Thompson TG 585 v8 and was set up by the company that gives me the broadband service and the phone line -Telecom Plus- part of The Utility Warehouse. They also send me the wireless adapter connected in my PC already set up.

Hi again

You manual is here

The page you want is 55

Change the channel from the default.

If it is set to 11 change it to 7 - not 10 as this would be too close.

To access your router software (Thompson Gateway GUI ) do the following

open Internet Explorer and where you see http:\\www. -------- highlight this and type in ....192.168.1.254 then hit ENTER

If you have a username and password enter these.

I did download it and save it and this weekend I will have a go. I am too tired today.

You are amazing... How do you manage to get all this so particular info?

Because if you ask to the Telecom for help a this level, they say that is not allowed to tamper with the equipment. But if it is mine! I did pay for it! So I can do whatever I want with my things and is not born yet the one to tell me what to do and not to do with my belongings.

Anyway, I will have some "fun" the weekend and I will back to you to let you know the results.

Kind regards.

Hi KenB

Aaah! Google... I don't know why I am not too very keen on Google but, again, Why not? I'll have a go more often.

I am not using IE but Mozilla Firefox. I feel that is a lot faster than IE, more accurate and with more facilities and better menu and control bars. I don't know... Probably I am starting to get the typical old people manias...

Certainly, in general terms, Microsoft and I have a rough relationship. For "funny" and not important things I use the best OS that Microsoft has produce so far, XP (the best improvement of 98), but Vista, 7 and 8 are absolute crap. They took away all the goodies of XP but they put a lot of "divine wonders" that drive crazy to the teenagers.

For business I am using Ubuntu Linux and AppleMac OS X Lion and I am in love with the Apple word processor on their office application iWork, Pages 09. Linux never was intended to be costumer friendly but for geeks and IT illiteracy crazy people like the one that is writing this replay. The free applications add-ons that came with Obuntu are very impressive and are more than 3.000. The basic Ubuntu, the Ubuntu Desktop, takes about 68Gb and the manual is 120 pages, but the Ubuntu Server manual is more than 360 pages (near as the one of Apache). The full Desktop with all the applications installed is near 4Tb.

The good thing is that Linux is an open source, so is free. The last to be paid for was RedHat (the one that I was using while in London).

Well... Let's go with the Thomson issue. When I did hit ENTER as you said, says that "The server could not be found". I did try to open the Wireless Configuration Utility that gets downloaded when install the software, doesn't allow me to open it because I am not authorized and I have not their Administrator password.

So, I'll keep not going near it with this particular mobile phone and the laptops.

The funny thing is that Telecom Plus gave me a modem to plug into the laptop to get into the network while going out and also works OK inside. Certainly, inside with the PC switched off, the laptop doesn't need the modem, catch 100% the signal from the wireless router. ?????????????????

Nop, similar.

I don't know how to to copy and paste figures from a word doc or attach something from my PC in this Forum but I have all the screen shots filed on the "IT problems".

Certainly the one that I have doesn't show anything from Thompson like yours just the site makes reference to Thompson Gateway.

Good afternoon KenB

Just a question... In this Forum, Can I post a screen shot just clicking on "" and enclosing the URL or I need Permission to do so? The notice in the bottom left says "Posting Permissions" and I don't know what that may mean.

Kind regards.

Thank you RandyL

I have it in Photobucket, anyway, just in case, but I am going to try what you say.

I was telling to KenB that what shows up when I do click in his link is not the same Thompson picture that he did enclose, but the one below, if I manage to do it. In any case also I write the Photobucket URL.

Hi Tino

I have located a connection :)

I have added the picture to your last post.

All you do is copy the IMG Code from the Photobucket image and paste it into your post.

I cannot read what it says in the box - but I assume that it is Login Name ( or similar ) and Password.

Try Admin for both / or try Admin for login and Password for password / or Admin for login and nothing in the password box.

Take a look on the base and back of the router.

It may tell you here what the login details are.

Sorry... Was supposed to set the picture in a legible size and I forgot to do it. But yes, says:

A username and password are being requested by http://dsldevice.lan. The site says: "Thompons Getaway"

And then the places for "User name" and "Password".

I did try before, following your advise, the Admin for both, Admin as username and Password as password and in the back of the router are only numbers for "SN" (Serial Number), "Bulk", "Mac" and "Access Key".

Following the advise of ukbobboy I did use also the Access Key, but no one of them did work either.

By the way: installed in the PC in the Thompson file when I did install the modem software, t here are a icon that says "Wireless Configuration Utility" but when I do click on it nothing happens at all.

If you click in the link enclosed in their text, you will get the notice that I've forgotten to resize.

I did try leaving the password in blank and didn't work either.

Lately is getting an habit to change default settings in anything. I suppose that is to protect business...

But sometimes is not, is just to say "I am more clever than you, try to go in now if you can". This is the case that someone did in a set of PCs in a Hastings' charity where I am teaching old people to use the PCs as voluntary work and really p**s me off to have to hack and disable the passwords because hacking is something that you don't expect to do in a charity organization, but...

Of course, the "thing" did provoke a row and in the end the "thing" was what I said before: "Look how clever I am". Fine... He got a bit of his own medicine.

It is obviously an issue with the modem when is working on wireless mode, because before I was using the same modem but not on wireless mode but plug on the phone line and in the PC Ethernet USB plug and was not interference at all in any gadget at all, so IT IS the wireless transmission the problem, but as Thompson has changed the default access settings...

To let things clear, I am not a hacker as such, but I did some online courses just to know because the best defense against something is to know how "something" works. An alarm system is good so far nobody knows how it works and where the detecting points are, otherwise is just useless.

Kind regards.
