W10/laptop freezes on start up when inputting pin number

Hi... a member of our family (Microsoft family365) is tech adverse but very reliant! on start up she attempts to put in her pin number and laptop freezes and all she can do is power off. online advice suggested this: on start up when spinning dots appear - hold down power for 5 - 10 secs to force hard shut down. Do this x3 times to enter safe mode and access system repair.my question: for an absolute novice, can anything go wrong...can she corrupt things or lose data?cheers and thanks in advance
