Guest chrissyd Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Hi, can anyone tell me what the system files hiberfil (521mb) and pagefile (786mb) do? These appeared in my C drive (not in any subdirectory) about an hour ago but both were created in Feb 2004. I've been unable to delete them. Thanks, chrissyd.
Guest db.·.. > Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Re: hiberfil & pagefile in c> drive they will appear as they are system files designed for windows. "pagefile" can be managed via the "virtual memory" dialog and "hibersys" is for your hibernation power option. you can google or go to microsoft.com and research the above quoted terms. in conclusion they are safe files and are vital for your system. -- db·´¯`·...¸><)))º> "chrissyd" <chrissyd@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:7003E8AA-2FFC-4D16-9A1E-8AC67D61ACE4@microsoft.com... > Hi, can anyone tell me what the system files hiberfil (521mb) and pagefile > (786mb) do? Guest John Barnett MVP Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Re: hiberfil & pagefile in c> drive Hiberfil is the file that stores your PCs hibernation status. When you use hibernation all the contents of your PC's memory are stored in the hiberfil.sys file so that when your PC returns from hibernation everything is ready for you just as you left it. Pagefile is another term for 'virtual memory' The page file is automatically created by Windows. Guest chrissyd Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Re: hiberfil & pagefile in c> drive Thanks, John. This figures - I've had the PC years but only just started to use the hibernate function. "John Barnett MVP" wrote: > Hiberfil is the file that stores your PCs hibernation status. Guest John Barnett MVP Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Re: hiberfil & pagefile in c> drive I used to use hibernate a lot when I used XP, I don't use it as often now I'm running vista I either use sleep (if I am away for 10 or 15 minutes) or if I am away some hours I turn the machine off. I noticed from your reply to DB that you were surprised at the file size. Actually the more memory you have the larger the file will get. Your machine has, I believe, 512MB RAM so your hiberfil is 512MB. In my case I use 2GB RAM so, had I had hibernation enabled on my machine my hiberfil size would have been 2GB. -- -- John Barnett MVP Windows XP Associate Expert Windows Desktop Experience Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org Web: http://www.silversurfer-guide.com The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is".
