New here - "Signart" - Windows XP Prof. - I have the password to log on and get in - but when I tried to delete some fonts, it said I needed permission. Administrators, I presume. So I go to Local security policy, then security options and then I get lost. What DOES one do? I got a "OKC" as a clue, but that does not help, and also it says the admin password is only good for 30 days. Edited by Starbuck

Hi.

I set the password!

"OKC" is the clue I gave myself, and noted, as to the new password.

( Is it "OKConstant" "OKCHarlie" or reversed "CharlieOK" etc etc . . No. )

So. Simpler to change the password.

Do emphasise - It is my laptop. Bought it 2nd hand. Dell D 420. XP Proff. 199 euros. I have the receipt. Send you a photocopy? ok. You can check with the shop.

If I was a wizard, I would be there by now . .

Regards

Hi - I am not doubting that this is your Pc.

The 30 days Admin account is strange as it usually applies, if it is an office Pc.

Others here may be able to throw some light on why this is the case with your Pc.

It sounds like you are accessing a user account and not the Administrator account.

How many accounts are set up on your Pc?

Are you able to download programs and make other changes [apart from deleting fonts] to your system?

permission

The 30 days I have now extended. This is not the first password I use to get in, because otherwise I could not get in. Its been the same for ages.

Admin tools > Local security policy > Security settings > Password policy > maximum password age. (I do not know which password this means)

.......................

Only one account. (Ah! Maybe 2 . .)There are traces of Egyptian language from the previous owner which I would like to get rid of, but that later.

.........................

Yes I am able to download programs. Also automatic updates from AVG. Microsoft windows, Libre office, etc.

..............................

Font message also says cannot delete cos "write protected" (or no permission.)

I know there are fonts you are not supposed to delete. They are noted.

Perhaps if I go back to the shop, but, with repect, I know they will charge me.

Hi Signart

It sounds as if your XP is not registered, you see when I was assembling/constructing my desktop PC there were things I could not do until my copy of XP Pro was registered with Microsoft.

And even though I had bought my copy of XP it was still time-limited until it was registered by phone.

Thank you. Makes sense. Sent a query off to Microsoft answers also. Reply sounds a little haughty. Can they do anything?

You asked:

Can they do anything?

Well, for a fee they can help you to register your copy of XP in your name otherwise your O/S will never be fully functional.

When I bought my copy of XP there was a serial number I could type into XP, and re-use on my phone's keypad. Microsoft's auto registration system took my serial number and gave me an alternative number to re-type into XP.

Now, if I remember correctly, the serial number I had, and Microsoft's alternate numbers, were in 8 blocks of 6, i.e 48 numbers, so you can see it was a long drawn out process.

However, I believe your problem is that you may not be able to get at the registered number in your copy of XP, so that you can re-register the O/S. But with MS's help this should not be a problem, you just have to get through to the right person.

Hi Signart,

Yes indeed there is a catch, those so called free versions are bound to be pirated copies and very much illegal. You could possibly finish up in a worse position than you are now in if you did download and install it.

Best bet is to follow Bobs advice and give Microsoft a ring.

Hi Signart

Just seen your latest post and, you know, Plastic Nev is absolutely right, if you go looking for a "so-called" free copy of XP you could land yourself in more trouble than you bargained for.

You see, I sandboxed one of my browsers and then followed your link, I found that it led to another link about using BitTorrent, which is one of those applications that ISPs are trying to discourage their customers from using.

Also, if you have followed the news, you will see that there is a world-wide campaign by the authorities and other organisations, like RIAA, BPI, FAST, etc., against web-sites that hosts copyrighted material (and XP is copyrighted material).

So, if you don't want the heavens to descend upon your head (or the chance thereof) you will leave those sites alone that promises something that is "too good to be true".

One other thing, not only is it illegal to download unauthorised copies of applications in this manner but what you get could be booby-trapped with viruses and/or worms.

So remember, don't let desperation prevent you from using your common sense.

Be careful and be safe.

Nev and Bob - Thank you very much!

One does not KNOW if an XP is illegal when the PC is purchased.

Just by the by, the font question is the only hiccup. Fonts that I download from the web and install, CAN be erased.

Thanks again.

Hi Signart

You said:

Well, every store that sells PCs, such as PC World, has to pay Microsoft a royalty/licence fee per PC sold and that cost is incorporated in the price you pay for your (store bought) computer.

So, PCs bought with pre-installed windows are legal because you, when you buy them, have paid the windows licence fee.

Hi, to add, unless of course you buy a second hand computer, then it is the old Latin phrase, which I can't quite recall, but it means "Let the buyer beware" :D

Any one want to buy a laptop? :ranger:

Hi Nev

You know, I had thought about the implications of buying second hand  and realised that Mr. MS would say that windows licences are not transferable. However, I guess that the second-hand market would say that as long as the software stays unchanged with the hardware then no additional licence fee is required:D.

Either way, I have never heard of a software manufacturer going after purchasers of second hand computers :).

Finally, these issues of whether second hand software can attract an additional licence fee, regardless of what the "terms and conditions" say, can only be decided by a court :argue:.

And, by the way, Buyer Beware.

The license actually stays with the computer, so a move of ownership of the computer is not a problem, transfer of license only refers to transferring the operating system from one computer to another.

In the case of standard OEM licenses this is not allowed, however with full retail license and depending on the type and certain conditions, as far as I know it can be transferred.
