DEMOTE

Hi to all, for the first time (for me...) i have to demote a domain

controller for a complete reinstallation, actually DCs are two.

The question is: have i to pay some attention to particular settings before

follow "dcpromo.exe" tool ? What happen to users logged in the domain ?

After reinstallation, this server will be promoted as DC with the other

one....

Thanks in advance

Bye

Luca

Hello Luca,

Since you have two DCs, just make sure that they both up to date with

replication. If no replication errors, then you can safely demote one

of them. There should be no issue with users that are logged on to the

domain, they will not even realized that one of the DC is offline. I

am assuming that the 2 DCs are in same domain. Yes, after

reinstallation the dc will just replicate its sysvol from the the

existing dc. and all your domain data will be intact. Just make sure

you demote and repromote one DC at a time. Make sure the new one is

functioning well before you start reinstallation of the other one.

You need to first off, make sure that the 2nd DC can fulfill all the

functions of the 1st one (DNS, DHCP, etc.). Make sure that you transfer

all the FSMOs to the 2nd DC (it must be a GC). When you DCPROMO the 1st

C, it should automatically transfer them to the other one, but most of

us would recommend doing it manually.

I would suggest taking the 1st DC off line for a while and verify that

there are no problems. Then DCPROMO is and rebuild.

There should be no impact to users already logged (assuming that the DC

is just a DC). I reboot my DCs routinely when there are Windows updates.

The only one I have to worry about is one that functions as a VPN

server. I have to make sure that no one has a tunnel open to it when I

reboot.
