Guest Jason Schoppert Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Hello Everyone: I got one that someone in here that may be able to answer real quick. I was given a laptop to clean some viruses and spyware off of, but someone else already had been in it and made things a lot worse for me. Anyways, I was able to get all the viruses and spyware off, but I was having a problem with the "Plug and Play" service hanging the taskbar on boot as well as locking up on shutdown. After messing around in msconfig for a while I was able to narrow it down to the "Plug and Play" service and disabled it. Unfortunately I did not realize that it would shut down the ethernet adapters and "BITS" as well as a few other things. So I copied over Windows XP Service Pack 3 from my server, I have it fully automated with a .cmd file. I ran the .cmd file and the service pack unpacked ok, but then disappeared, I figured ... uh oh!! So I ran the installer without the .cmd file so I could see the error. Now mind you this already has service pack 3 installed, I get an error saying that this version of the service pack was incompatible with the one that was installed. I checked out the properties of "My Computer" and found that it said "Windows XP Service Pack 3, v.5657. I am looking at it and saying "what is this"? Can some one confirm that this may be in fact a Beta of the service pack? If so, there is a real moron where I work cause it looks like he slip streamed it into the Windows XP install an it means I am screwed, there is no uninstall in the "Application Wizard" ... time for are-install!! Thanks in advance, Jason Schoppert

If I acquired a used computer, the first thing I would do with it would be to reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddy porn, etc., and I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either. In your case in particular, you are dealing with a computer with problems, and even more than most people, certainly should begin by clean installing. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup

Guest Jason Schoppert Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Issue Ken: Thank you for the reply. I guess I didn't explain myself well enough, I am the Lead Network Admin at a Ford Dealership (I specialize in spyware and adware removal, that's why everyone brings me their computer) and this happens to be a laptop that belongs to the service manager. I originally installed Windows XP on it for him, its just someone else installed Service Pack 3. When I saw the "v.5657" at the end I figured it was a beta. I am going to start the reload now. Anyway thank you for your help. OK, so when you said "I was given a laptop," you didn't mean that literally, but rather you meant that someone brought you *his* computer to work on for him. I understand now; sorry to have misunderstood you. I originally > installed Windows XP on it for him, its just someone else installed Service > Pack 3.
