briggs Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Hello, am using a compaq laptop and am trying to turn on my laptop but it always come up with a black screen plus this message "Windos could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll. please re-install a copy of the above file..." please help...i really have no glue how to fix that and what it meant... it actually happened when i tried to install my xp professional and my laptop suddenly shuts down...i try turning it on again thats what happend Quote

Do you have the disk in the drive when you switch on again ? Is the CDROM set as the first boot device in the BIOS ? It must be otherwise you could get this error with a partially installed OS.
