Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error!

Recommended Posts

I am trying to diagnose a problem with a tiny software application

called vdat.

BACKGROUND: I have a large live music collection...much of it is

recorded onto Digital Audio Tape (DAT). I have a DDS tape drive (Sony

SDT-9000) with a special firmware update which allows the drive to

read digital audio data and transfer it to my hard drive at up to 4

times normal speed.

The software program that controls the tape drive and allows me to

choose what portion of the tape I wish to copy is called vdat.

I previously ran this application on another PC without any problems.

I recently built a new PC...with the identical configuration, but now

whenever I try to open vdat, I get the following error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files/vdat\vdat.exe

abnormal program termination

I can get vdat to open in Safe Mode (but then, of course, I have no

DDS Tape Drive to control).

I've tried running SysInternals' Process Monitor in an attempt to

diagnose the problem, but it's a bit over my head.

I am running Windows XP SP3. I have checked and rechecked my hardware

configuration and everything appears to be working properly. My ASPI

layer is also installed and working correctly. The developer of vdat

has not responded to my requests for support.

If anyone has any suggestions for how I might go about diagnosing this

problem, I would be most appreciative. I would also appreciate if

someone might be able to direct me to someone who could help me with

this problem. I'm willing to pay for tech support, but so far, this

problem appears to be over everybody else's head too.

Thanks,

Paul

Why are you reposting an identical post you made in another newsgroup over a

year ago that had several replies (none of which you ever replied to)? =>

Re: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error!

I apologize for my improper etiquette. I attempted ALL of the repairs

suggested to me a year ago. None of them worked and I was too busy

with other projects (work) to explore it any farther at the time. Now

I've returned to this sore spot and I'm determined to get to the

bottom of it:

1) A year ago, John suggested that the software was too old to run on

WinXP. While vdat may have been written for Win98, I used it on my

other PC with WinXP for 2 years without any problems.

2) As per Mark's suggestion, I have reinstalled the VC++ runtime

libraries. This did nothing to alleviate the problem.

Any additional suggestions would be most welcome.

Thank you and thanks for your prompt reply.

Paul

Have you tried "Compatibility Mode"?

Re: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error!

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I've tried all options in

every conceivable combination in "Compatibility Mode", but none have

solved this problem. I suspect there's probably a conflict with some

..dll file. How would I go about diagnosing this to find the problem?

It's perplexing since I didn't have the problem on my previous WinXP

setup.

Re: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error!

Microsoft has a DLL Help Database that may be of some limited use.

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=prod&l=55&pid=2990&vid=195640&S=0

Another trick you might consider is to burn a copy of C:\Windows

(from the PC that will not run the app) to a DVD

and then use a file comparison software application

That said one utility that I have used in the past is: Beyond Compare

http://www.scootersoftware.com/moreinfo.html

You would compare the files on the DVD to the

C:\Windows directory located on the PC that will run your application.

What may seem like two identical PC's may if fact have small differences.

Also an outside possibility is the .NET versions you have installed:

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework

However your app may predate .NET which is why I said outside chance.
