ilom Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Greetings Long time Mac user, 1998. Service computers, camped in a data center in down town atlanta ga. Just got a mini server, today in fact. I have a mini mac PowerPC G4. Here is the question I would like to get an answer to. I want to migrate the applications from the G 4 mini to the server and then, and I know i am wasting resources. Use the server just for home, Quicken burn some Itunes for the hotrod and store my photos and other miss type of stuff. A. I think I need to boot the G 4 in the shared CD mode; then using the disk utility run migration, for my home folder and applications. I believe this will bring over the libraries also ...... is that correct ........The OS on the G4 is 10.4.1.1 B. Thinking about the application folder, things like safari would the migration feature overwrite the servers pre loaded safari? Can I select the individual applications to be migrated. C. The mini server as you probably know does not have an optical drive, so it would be necessary to use the Toast application to support a optical drive. D. long story short is I would like to use this server as a client and leave the server OS in tact .... any thoughts? thanks in advance.. Quote
ilom Posted December 24, 2010 Author Posted December 24, 2010 Thanks, well decided that the server was going back, reordered a hopped up mini and will have an external terabyte drive. Forget the raid leaving the raid for the work machines, I can play with those and get my raid fix day too day. The problem I ran into trying to install the server was with the applications. I figure that the bundled software of the client mini would be a better fit for the purpose it will be used for. Yes two internal drives is a cleaner foot print, I can live without. Apples support and general knowledge or lack of is very surprising. Direct questions about procedures regarding the use of the very applications they provide is astounding. They can not even give informative advice about the capabilities of the product they sell, not good and was the reason I thought I could use the mini server. An example utilities specifically; I asked them about making a boot-able drive and they could not answer that. Referred me to forums and third party resources. I did learn pecking around the net. that fire wire is the only way you can boot from and external hard drive, that was of value. I assume the port speed of the USB lags and therefor will not provide a path that the OS can use to boot. Once I found that out I launched the disk utility and made a boot-able hard drive ....... using the OS already built into my mac ........ gee what a surprise. Mac is a great product and the design is good, 1998 I was doing field service for the mac and learned very quickly just how good the machines were. The people that sell, phone support stink, everyone of them needs to take a machine home and be forced to load and configure the software, so they can have a clue. They have caused loads of lost data to the customers they have; coughing; helped. Not me though thankfully, I lost data once using the Retrospect back up application, went to uncompress the data and found I had configured it incorrectly .... to bad for me. But that was early in my computing learning curve so not to bad... rant over Merry Christmas ......... HFH Quote

rldgooots Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 ilom, Most of what you are talking about is over my head unfortunately but I am not surprised that Customer Service is poor. The machines are so good they don't have to be any good I guess. I am in Atlanta area as well. Hello Neighbor!!!! Quote
