Dnash20 Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Hi I have recently booted up my pc having not used it in over a year and now every time I run my pc the screen goes black after a few minutes and I have to restart it to get any picture back on the screen. I'm assuming it could be my graphic card? Need any more info to help find a solution please ask. Thanks. David. Quote
KenB Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS Open up the side panel and check the system for dust. If there is any - use a can of compressed air in short bursts. Pay particular attention to the fans and the video card. ( It may be best to do this outside :) ) You could also take the Video Card out > clean the contacts with a pencil eraser > reseat it. Dnash20 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 Thanks. I have just tried doing that and still no luck. I've tried downloading new drivers when I've been able to see what is happening but still nothing. Any other ideas? Quote
KenB Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Does the m/board have on-board video? If so - take the card out and try the on-board connection. Dnash20 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 I've taken the card out and plugged it in through the VGA slot of the back of the pc. It has got the same problem. One thing I have just remembered is that I had to replace my psu last year but I remember it worked fine. I went for a corsair tx750 and was told it was more than enough to run what I have. Quote
KenB Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 If you are getting the same condition with the card and on-board video we can rule that out. Try taking the RAM out and switch on. It will not boot up - but it should be stable. If it is - put just one module back in and try again. Swap the RAM modules over to test each module. b-t-w ...........does the machine get to the point where it is actually booted up ? Dnash20 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 I'll give that a go now. Yeah gets on to the desktop and you can do everything but just after 5 mins or so the screen goes black and won't turn back on. Quote
Dnash20 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 Hi, ive found out two things. I have 4 RAM slots, 2 of which are in use. The slots are coloured (i dont know if this makes any difference or not), and the RAM is placed in the 2 green slots. When i put one of the RAM pieces back in the slots, if i use the left one (see the picture) it beeps at me and wont boot at all. if i use the right hand green one it boots fine, however the screen still goes black. Secondly i had a programmed that was supplied by ATI called AMD Fusion, it is meant to overclock the pc and graphics card automatically so you dont need to mess around with clock speeds yourself etc. I removed it a while ago as i never noticed much difference but it has started coming up with this message when i start my pc. Not sure if this could have any effect. I really appreciate your help on this. Thanks. Quote
KenB Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 The coloured slots are there so that you can identify the position for the RAM. If you are using just 2 modules they must be put in the correct slots - in your case the green ones. You have the provision for 2 matched pairs. If your machine is shutting down after 5 mins it could be heat related. If you can download Speccy from here. ( the free version ) http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download If you can run it and post the temperatures this will give us the relevant information. KenB Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Those temperatures are fine. I am now thinking it could be PSU. Do you have one that you could exchange ? (it doesn't have to be the same wattage) Take a look at the motherboard capacitors. Do any have domed tops or leaking ? I am away for a few weeks so somebody else should pick this up :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
