The good old limera1n exploit works to jailbreak the first beta of iOS 5, according to renowned jailbreak dev @MuscleNerd, suggesting a public jailbreak will be available for iOS 5b1 soon.

The pictures above were tweeted by MuscleNerd and clearly show iOS 5 beta 1 with Cydia installed alongside another shot showing ssh connecting to localhost. A later picture, shown below, shows Cydia running on the jailbroken device. This jailbreak was said to require a tethered boot on an iPod touch 4th gen.

For the speed alone this is an impressive feat, and obviously the longstanding limera1n vulnerability was not patched by Apple yet, but with many of the new iOS 5 features is jailbreaking as useful anymore? This was part of the argument that iOS 5 and the eventual iPhone 5 would kill jailbreaking by matching some of the most desired features, and WWDC showed many of these off: new notifications management, volume button as a camera shutter, LED flash as a call indicator, improved lock screens, etc.

For many users these new features might just be enough for them to avoid jailbreaks, but for those that demand hardcore customizations or just like to tinker, jailbreaking likely won’t be going anywhere.

iOS 5 gets a public release this fall.
