Hello,

My name is Stan. I am in the southern CA area. A TRUE Computer Novice ... when I had computer classes in college, they still had punch cards to give you an idea of my 'generation' ! My entire computer experience has been Apple [Mac], and only began after getting married to an avid Mac user.

The reason that I sought out help here on the forums is that I have been a very active forum contributor on motorsport enthusiast forums, and know that a wealth of knowledge exists on these boards. I am hopeful to have someone or plural spoon-feed me information about repairing/upgrading an older Mac Mini G4 that is currently a paperweight.

I have a MacBook, and the latest MacMini for daily use, so I am only contemplating opening the older unit up to have as a 'spare'. Following are the specs:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: Mac mini

Model Identifier: PowerMac10,1

Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)

Processor Speed: 1.42 GHz

Number Of CPUs: 1

L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Memory: 1 GB / 80Gb

Bus Speed: 167 MHz

Boot ROM Version: 4.8.9f4

The Optical Drive has been inoperable for years. I finally just jumped on the latest MacMini because I got a great deal on it. Planned to sell the paperweight on eBay; but, I cannot wipe my drive without the use of the Optical Drive. AND, they sell for so little, that I thought perhaps I could 'Frankenstein' the unit and have a darn good spare as a result.

I have watched several YouTube videos on modding Mac Minis. The reason that I am here is to find out how I can determine what components will WORK inside my housing with the Mac motherboard. I buy most of my computer-related items on NewEgg, and hope that there are enough mac users on the forums to lend their expertise. Also, I fully acknowledge the Disclaimer ... "Not responsible for any damage to your unit ... " .

So, anyone want to help me get my feet wet on suitable UPgrades if I am going to bother opening up the paperweight ?

Thanks !!
