Dear all,

I have a laptop which has DVD ROM broken. I would like to re-format

it. I have searched on the internet about how to re-format over the

network and I have found to do RIS but it is on Windows Server 2000.

Currently, I have only Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Furthermore, I

have never done that before.

Could anyone please help me to detail about how to re-format windows

XP over the network?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks in advance,

Yours sincerely,

Susan

Did you want to format your laptop's hard disk over the network? You can't

do this, and if you could then there would be nothing left on it. What

exactly is your aim? Do you want to reload Windows? If so then have a look

at this recent thread:

Well, if the laptop is not too old and does have a USB port, you can

use a tool out there to format and make bootable a USB drive and then

boot off the USB drive to do a format. Of course, you should Google

and do a search on the specifics as there are many sites out there

that describe the logistics.

The BEST solution is to get the CD-ROM drive replaced/fixed.

The next-best solution is to remove the laptop's hard drive and make it

accessible to another machine on which you run the format process.

I don't think you can format a system drive over the network.

The system on the target machine has to be running to handle requests for

disk activity done by a remote machine. If you could format the target

drive, there'd be no operating system on the target machine to handle

anything directed to the target machine.

For these reasons, once you do get the target drive formatted, you can't

re-install XP from a remote machine.
