Select folders to auto upload on google photos?

Maybe I'm mixing up this back from when I used to use android, but can you not select the folders that you want google photos to automatically upload to the cloud? I ended up with some stuff being uploaded to the cloud that I didn't want to (like memes my friends send me on WhatsApp)
