optical drive from 4,1 or 5,1 work with 3,1?

I see a few of these used around for cheap.

Hitachi Optical Drive 678-0579 GH41N Apple P/N 661-4809 for Mac Pro 4,1

 

will they work with a MP3,1? The OEM OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A are for *****.

And I have not found a way to update the firmware, if that would even make a difference
