Guest J Wolfgang Goerlich Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Is there a Windows Server 2008 version of the "Device Manager Does Not Display Devices Not Currently Present in Windows" article? Setting devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 does not work for 2008. Thanks in advance, J Wolfgang Goerlich Device Manager Does Not Display Devices Not Currently Present in Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241257

No, non-present devices are shown when you enable the devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices option in earlier version of Windows. Apparently something changed in Server 2008. - Thee Chicago Wolf
Guest Darrell Gorter[MSFT] Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Re: Show non-present devices in Windows 2008? Hello, It should be working. Have you restarted Device Manager since making the change? did you also check Show Hidden Devices? 1) You have to set the environment variable 2) You have to restart Device Manager 3) You have to enable Show Hidden Devices. Then the non-present devices should show up. Guest J Wolfgang Goerlich Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Re: Show non-present devices in Windows 2008? Here is what I did: RDP into the Windows Server 2008 computer, creating a new session; launch command prompt, run as administrator; type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1; type start devmgmt.msc; click View in Device Manager and select Show hidden devices. I believe there is an old network adapter still present. I am prompted when specifying the IP address: "The IP address you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter." When I expand the Network Adapters after following the above steps, the old network adapter is not shown. Is there something else I should do in 2008? Guest Darrell Gorter[MSFT] Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Re: Show non-present devices in Windows 2008? Hello, those steps work fine for me. I used RDP into a Windows Server 2008 machine Opened a CMD prompt Set the variable set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 ran devmgmt.msc from the CMD Prompt Enabled show hidden devices In this case I show USB drives that were attached and are not now attached with a code 45. Just to make sure we are looking in the same spot In Device Manager are you looking under the Network Adapters for the device? And to be sure that we are looking for the same thing in device manager. Grey-out devices with a code 45 if you check properties of the device.
