Guest M.L. Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I'm posting on behalf of a friend who is getting a 301 keyboard error upon booting with the native USB keyboard on her Compaq XP desktop. She purchased a PS/2 keyboard and it works fine, but she highly prefers her Compaq USB keyboard and wants to get it working as it did before. Any troubleshooting assistance will be appreciated. Thanks.

I had planned on doing that as one of my last recourses (the other being to buy a USB-to-PS/2 adapter), but I was hoping I would find a solution that didn't involve making a purchase first.

She can borrow a keyboard from a friend. Or she can just buy a cheap USB keyboard. I have a very nice one from Logitech that cost $14, so this is no big deal. Another thing to try is to connect the questionable keyboard to a different computer and see if it works there, but I think swapping out keyboards on the original machine is a more definitive test. Thanks. I'll try both your recommendations, and if necessary, will try the adapter solution too.
