Guest Mike-in-Houston Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 I adopted a windows server 2003 SP1 client that wants to phase out there tape drive backup method that currently uses Symantec backup exec 10d. I'm reading up on that program now to see if it allows you to substitute rotating external USB drives for the tape drive it currently has configured. Meanwhile, I tried to schedule ntbackup to perform a backup nightly to an attached USB drive and it doesn't start up at the scheduled time. Manual starts work fine. Is it a logon permission issue? Did the Backup Exec program turn off this feature? Will updating to the current SP level fix it? One last thing. The server doesn't have a keyboard of monitor, so I logged on thru remote desktop as administrator to configure the ntbackup schedule. Does it have to be configured by a local user?

It is common to believe that ntbackup.exe does not start but in most cases it does start but fails to finish for some reason. What does the backup log report? What does it say in the Task Scheduler log file?

Does it have to be configured by a local user? Nope, shouldn't make any difference.
