Firstly this is my first post so hello =)

I have recently started using a tv in place of a monitor, for this i am using a cable with a HDMI connecter in the tv that runs to the graphics card which only has the older style sockets (so no HDMI to HDMI).

Because of this (i think) i have no sound from the tv. I purchased http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000NHOMSQ/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00 thinking it was the right audio cable but the two plugs are loose in the back of the tv and just slide out. If it helps the sockets in the tv are labelled red and white.

I'm now stumped as i thought these were the right connecters. Can anybody direct me to the one i need?

Thanks for the welcome!

I will keep that one in mind but it looks like it has more than what i need, i think i only need the audio cable running from my pc to the tv, hopefully for less money.

Those audio jacks do not look like RCA jacks for the T.V input. They should look like these i believe.

Looking closely at the pics , I reckon they are the same plugs.

Could do with either a piccy of your TV's plugs, or its make and model number.

I know that the plugs look similar, but Christos said the ones purchased did not fit properly. That'swhy I linked the other sort which as far as I am aware are the standard RCA jacks to fit in the red and white sockets on most television's and the same as I use on our kids Bush unit.

The Amazon ones are Phono plugs, the ebay item looks the same, mini stereo jack, 3.5mm to phono, or RCA as some people call it.

The TV spec says it has an AV socket, which will be the two stereo audio plus the one video..and as standard they are RCA.

I have admit defeat - I really don't know what to advise.

Hmm strange! Could it be that these plugs are somehow too small and SHOULD fit? or even worse possibly the sockets?

Would it be risky to try using them? i can wedge them so they stay in but could it cause sparks?

Assuming these are the red and white(the bottom pair) connections on your TV.

Then the set of connectors i linked from amazon should be what you need. The ones you have bought do not look like they have the shrouds on them to fit around the sockets and hold them secure.

Righto, i'll do the sensible thing and order all of the ones you guys linked as they're pretty cheap anyway!

If that doesnt work i'll have to consider it a write off for now, thanks for all your help chaps.

Well the extra cables arrived but im still having no luck!

I know this is a very rookie question but just so im sure, which colour socket should it plug into on the pc, light green?

Also could there be a specific setting i have to set the tv to?

Posted

Yes for the jack socket on the computer, lime green is sound out. To check it is working plug a headphone set or similar into it. Are you sure also the sockets on the TV are for sound in and not sound out? Do they look similar to those in the picture Helcaraxe posted, if so are you using the red and white ones?

It may also be a setting on the TV, but that should be shown in the manual for the TV. Sorry I can't help with that though, as I can't seem to find an on line manual for that TV.

OK I think I see your ptoblem. I don't know all that much about British TVs but I think you are trying to mix apples and oranges. HDMI carries both audio and video. So if you set your TV to HDMI for your monitor and you are set up so you are connecting the HDMI cable to your grapichs card using an adapter you are not going to get any sound period no matter what cables you use.

Since you need to select an input on your TV and from what you have said you are using HDMI then there are no inputs that will give you sound. In that case you need to use speakers directly connected to the PC. Probably you will need to use the green analogue output. Keep in mind that monitors are just monitors and you are trying to convert it into a hybrid monitor and speaker system. That will generally not work.

The photo above in post 10 is for a Component input. That means that for the audio to work along with the video you will need to set the input on the TV to component. Of course in that case you will then get sound but no picture.

What you need to do is find an adapter that will go from whatever output is on your computer and convert it to componant. Unfortunately that is not as easy as it seems. because you may need 2 adapters for the single set of component cables. One for the three video inputs on the TV and another to convert your green output to the other 2 audio components on the TV.

If your TV has a VGA input you will need to use that along with an analogue cable for audio. (If the TV has a VGA input then it will should (usually) also have a means of picking up sound from a simple mini jack cable.) Otherwise, If you have a stereo around try connecting your sound from the PC to the stereo system and see if that will give you sound from the stereo and graphics on the TV.

EDIT: I just looked at the specs for that TV and it is simply not designed for use as a monitor. The only shot you have is to try the Stero as I suggested above. The HDMI converison you are using should allow you to use it as a monitor. The sound will have to come from another source. If your computer has speakers you should still be getting sound from them. If your connection to the TV causes the speakers to shut down then you are simply out of luck with that particular TV.

I am beyond my time to edit so please read my post above. I have thought of one ray of hope for you. The TV has an SVideo input. Since SVideo does not carry audio most TVs that have it as an alternate connection also has an audio input that is designed to work with it. Look at your TV if there is an audio input right at the SVideo connection then you should be able to get an adapter to use the svideo from your PV and use the existing audio with a basic cable.

Just to save you guys some troubles here's the back of my TV, i assume SVideo is the yellow socket? I just tested some headphones in the audio out (lime green) socket on my pc and they work fine so it must be as you say apples and oranges.

The specs I read must be wrong because that is not Svideo it is an ordinary analogue video input. SVideo looks quite different. But I don't see that on your TV unless it is up at the top where the Coax input seems to be. I have no idea what sort of cabling is available in the UK but if there is something that will convert the video signal to that yellow input then you can certainly get a cable that will convert your audio output to the red and white audio inputs. Those three inputs work together and will only work if they are selected. Now that I see that the HDMI must be on the top left if there is an SVideo I assume it is up there someplace.

One thing I am quite sure of is that those 2 audio inputs will not work with the HDMI selected.

First of all, may I say thanks for the reminder BeeCeeBee, I had forgotten the mention of HDMI at the TV end and of course you are right. The TV set up for HDMI will look for audio on that input, and ignore the input from the red and white RCA ports.

However, we need to know what exactly the output is from the computer and if there is an analogue output. There may then be an adapter to convert to the yellow AV in 1. Or even the scart socket.

That by the way is not S Video, the S video plug and socket look similar to a keyboard or mouse plug and socket. Only similar though, not a match and usually black. The round mouse or keyboard has six pins, S video only four.

Edit to add, similar thoughts BeeCeeBee you posted while I was writing.

Thanks for the picture, they do look like RCA sockets to me - very strange your cables don't fit.

Nev mentioned HDMI, and if I have it right, you have a DVI socket out from your PC video card, which plugs in to your TV HDMI socket. Is that correct?

Also, Beeceebee has a good point, the audio will only work when selected on your TV. If you select the audio input, you will not get the HDMI, it will be classed as a different input - well that is how it works on my TV.

How to get around it? IMHO I would buy a pair of £10 speakers to plug in to my PC, use those for the sound and use the TV for the picture.

The other alternative is to swap to a video card that drives the sound through the video card so the HDMI carries both audio and video.

To add a bit more information, which I hope doesn't confuse the situation any more than it is, I have just found this site, a very informative pictures and description of the different video ports, what they do and can't do. have a look here=

http://www.thatcable.com/info/TV-connections-explained-HDMI-DVI-VGA-AUDIO

The company also supply cables and adapters.

Does your graphics card have an older standard VGA port? if so there may be an adapter to work to the RCA yellow port, the sound channels can then be connected and the TV set to component input, should hopefully work then if those RCA plugs will push in fully into the RCA ports. Those RCA plugs sometimes need a good push so that the outer of the plug goes over the outer of the socket, if only the centre pin is plugged in it will be loose.
