Shoud I configure redundant time server

Recommended Posts

As I understand the PDC emulater normally is configured as the

Authoritative Time Server, however, should I configure more time

servers for redundancy?

If I do, will they serve as time servers, or until I promot one of

them as the PDC role?

Is there specific doc on this?

Hello april,

In a domain only the PDCEmulator is the time source, per domain you can have

ONLY one PDCEmulator. So you can not make another DC PDCEmulator in the same

domain. What you can do, is to configure multiple external time sources for

the PDCEmulator.

my further reading seems to suggest that I can set up that way, but it

won't be part of the hierachy, and as long as I use the same time

source, I should be ok?

Hello april,

Maybe you have a look on this one:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773013.aspx

In a domain you have basically nothing to do, except to configure the PDCEmulator

to an external time source or hardware clock. Even if the clients are not

connected to the domain they still have valid time and should not run totally

different. Also if you connect back to the domain, they automatically get

the correct time again.

Maybe you can describe your problem a bit more, so that we can understand

what you are trying to achive.

Best regards

I don't have a pressing issue right now, but explore the design

options ..

based on my understanding, it's doable, but need to be careful and not

to make it counter productive.
