You can use the free Process Explorer to see what is using svchost.exe. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx Other general troubleshooting: The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't? The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? I now bring up the windows task manager & delete svchost.exe that is using all the time. So far I have the cpu back & no adverse effects that I can tell. Interesting thing is I found my notebook with the same problem. It must be some application I run. Go figure! On a couple of my older IBM laptops, I'd arrive at the same situation and it turned out to be related to using Microsoft Update rather than Windows Update. Could that possibly be relevant to your machine? Art
